The subject encourages self-expression and creativity. Additionally, students develop critical thinking and ability to interpret the world around them.

Students master ‘core skills’, equips students with the confidence and knowledge to invent, experiment and create. Develop critical thinking of artists and designers. Respond to new technologies and projects connect to career pathways.

Classrooms are places of mutual respect, which reflects the school’s behaviour policy. Additionally, the work and beliefs that students have should be respected at all times.

Our course is designed so students have a clear idea of the planned, sequential and layered knowledge of the curriculum they are studying.

The subject responds heavily to new technologies in the world around them, such as use of digital media and software. Staff keep up-to-date with subject pedagogy through the NSEAD and links with other local Art and Design departments. Links with working Artists and Designers.

Analysis and evaluation of own practice is constantly encouraged to strengthen the visual impact of students’ work.

Students have opportunities to extend their practice at both break and lunchtimes. Regular house photography competitions and trips to local and national galleries.

Both GCSE and A-Level courses allow students to express a sense of personal identity through the themes they develop and study. Curriculum equips students with the characteristics to be inquisitive, disciplined and determined individuals.

Students’ effort and success is highlighted through the use of rewards such as achievements points and VISAs. Additionally, praise emails and Head Teacher Award nominations are also implemented by departmental staff. Use of visualisers in lessons to model and praise work. High quality school displays celebrate individuals achievement and progress.

Culture of high expectations is fostered with mastering of materials and rich subject knowledge. High levels of engagement and producing work of the expected quality and quantity.
