The school is currently working towards the Rainbow Flag Award which means that we are committed to improving the lives of all young people we work with, through a focussed initiative to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBTQ+) inclusion.
This includes supporting LGBTQ+ students, LGBTQ+ staff, and LGBTQ+ parents and anyone who uses different pronouns.
As a school, we are determined to share a positive and celebratory message regarding LGBTQ+ people both within our community and on a worldwide basis. We aim to convey this message in a myriad of ways: via our lesson plans, policies, assemblies, newsletters, displays, student voice and in our governors’ meetings, to name but a few. We also seek to challenge and eradicate any discrimination or LGBTphobia displayed in our school.
Our students’ LGBTQ+ group meets fortnightly, providing our young people with a safe and supportive environment. They can make new friendships, get peer support and have fun! They explore LGBTQ+ issues and celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and culture, for example via books, musicals and films. They have also recently started a podcast and a School Radio Show called “Dear Straight People”.
