Learning Support at Calday is provided for students with additional educational, medical and emotional needs so that they can take a full part in school life and fulfil their potential as successful, independent learners. Many aspects of a student’s school life, whilst not fitting the definition of Special Educational Needs, clearly constitute individual needs from that particular student’s point of view.
A given set of circumstances may mean that a student needs additional emotional, academic, medical, social or behavioural support to deal with specific problems over a period of time. We aim to provide that support.
Student Support
The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) offers guidance an expertise to students and their parents/carers who have individual or health care needs.
The Assistant SENCO provides one to one support for students with individual needs. She is a dyslexia specialist teacher, Irlen’s assessor and tests for examination access arrangements.
The Learning Mentor and Wellbeing Coordinator offers one-to-one and small group mentoring sessions including; groups for younger learners supporting their transition from primary school, low level interventions in anxiety and low mood to small groups from all years, and Youth Connect 5 for parents/carers to help their children to develop emotional wellbeing and resilience.
The School Counsellor is available for self-referral from students, from staff or from parents/carers. The Counsellor works in confidence with any student who needs emotional support and often this work will enable access to other support as part of an on-going process. Confidentiality does not apply if there is a safeguarding issue.
The Family Liaison Officer (FLO) provides support for both students and their parents, signposting to appropriate organisations and can offer off site/home visits if needed.
Learning Support Assistants provide support for specific students who require one to one or small group support respectively.
