On Thursday 12th December 2024, Calday Grange Grammar School hosted a highly successful Year 8 Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP) Intensive Learning Day, where students immersed themselves in the Chinese language and culture. The event brought together students from Calday Grange Grammar School, St John Plessington Catholic College, and Shevington High School, fostering a collaborative and competitive spirit.

The day kicked off with a group vocabulary test, challenging students to showcase their Mandarin knowledge and recall skills. This was followed by agroup writing competition, where students worked together to produce impressive Chinese compositions based on the given topic.

After a morning of linguistic challenges, students enjoyed a Chinese talent show, where they demonstrated their singing skills in Chinese. The excitement continued with a traditional Chinese lunch, offering an authentic taste of Chinese cuisine, giving everyone a well-deserved break and a chance to experience cultural immersion through food. The students even had a go at using chopsticks for the very first time!

One of the highlights of the day was the traditional Chinese instrument workshop, where students had the opportunity to learn about and try their hand at traditional instruments. This hands-on experience enriched their understanding of Chinese culture and music.

To cap off the event, prizes were awarded to outstanding teams who came 1st in the vocabulary quiz, and 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the writing competition, recognizing their hard work, teamwork, and dedication throughout the day. The Intensive Learning Day was a fantastic opportunity for students to strengthen their Mandarin skills, build confidence, and connect with peers from other schools.

Thank you to all the schools, staff, and students who participated and made the day a memorable success!
