We’re pleased to share that Mr Connell has been named Secondary School Teacher of the Year at the 2025 Wirral Education Awards, organised by the Wirral Globe.

Mr Connell joined Calday Grange Grammar School in 2017 as an early careers teacher. In just eight years, he’s become a key member of staff and a trusted figure among pupils, parents and colleagues. He teaches art from Year 7 to A Level and also coordinates the school’s PSHE and careers programme.

His teaching style is clear and consistent. He sets high standards, communicates well with pupils and parents, and is known for his calm, supportive manner. His work is often described as dedicated and nurturing, and that’s reflected in the feedback he receives.

One nomination described him as “the most dedicated and nurturing teacher I have seen”. A parent commented, “Mr Connell has inspired my son to push himself academically and socially, and to embrace all aspects of school life. He makes my son feel safe and supported at school.”

Another said, “He has been my son’s form tutor since Year 7 and went out of his way to make the settling in process very straightforward.” Others noted how well he communicates, how clear he is about expectations, and how much his pupils admire and respect him. One comment read, “He has high standards for the boys in his form but makes it clear what he expects of them. They all admire him and that encourages them to do the best they can.”

“He truly is an exceptional teacher,” said another.

Stephen Gray, Headteacher at Calday Grange Grammar School, said:

“We are absolutely delighted that Mr Connell has been honoured as Secondary School Teacher of the Year in the Wirral Education Awards. We’re proud to celebrate this recognition of Mr Connell’s contribution to school life, and thank him for his ongoing commitment to our students.
