Calday Grange Grammar School recently held its annual Senior Awards Evening last night, recognising the exceptional achievements of students across a range of disciplines. The event, attended by students, families, staff, and distinguished guests, showcased the school’s commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and personal development.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Mr Martin Underwood, Vice-Chair of the Governing Body. This was followed by the Headteacher’s Report, delivered by Mr Stephen Gray, who reflected on the successes of the past year and the resilience shown by students and staff alike.

The highlight of the evening was the address by guest speaker Mr Ollie Thomson, a former student of Calday (2006–2013). Ollie shared his inspiring journey from Calday to becoming an Operations Manager for the HALO Trust, a humanitarian organisation dedicated to clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance in conflict zones. Drawing on his experiences in Kosovo, Libya, Iraq, and Cambodia, Ollie emphasised the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and using education as a foundation to make a difference in the world.

Ollie also highlighted the connection between his work and Calday, noting the school’s fundraising efforts last year, which raised over £5,000 for the refurbishment of Koz Agam School in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. He encouraged attendees to continue supporting impactful causes, pointing to the ongoing work of the HALO Trust.

The audience was treated to a musical interlude by Year 11 student James Gilbert, accompanied by Sally Bibby, performing Elgar’s Chanson de Matin. The performance added a reflective and uplifting tone to the evening.

The presentation of prizes, led by Mr Thomson, honoured students for their achievements in academics, leadership, and extracurricular activities. Awards celebrated not only high academic standards but also contributions to the school community and beyond.

The evening concluded with a heartfelt expression of thanks from Deputy Head Boy, Arjun Mewar, and closing remarks from Mr Gray.

Calday Grange Grammar School extends its gratitude to all who contributed to the evening, particularly Mr Thomson for his inspiring words, and to the families and staff who support students in achieving their potential.
