The year 11 football team were keen to put in a winning performance in the Merseyside Cup on Wednesday afternoon, following their National Elite Cup defeat to the superb Wright Robinson two weeks ago.
The game was a proper cup match, officiated by a strong referee who ordinarily practises his trade in the Vanarama National League. Both sides started the game with intent, Calday putting into practice the work they had done on the training ground with their excellent passing moves, whilst their opponent, Chesterfield High School from Crosby, were more direct with their approach.
Buoyed on by the vocal support of their fellow year 11 classmates, the men in maroon deservedly took the lead through Allport, who was rewarded for his excellent close-ball control which caused the visitors problems all afternoon.
And the game continued in a similar manner, Calday extending the lead to 2-0 thanks to another fine finish by the captain.
Chesterfield pulled a goal back early in the second half, as their attacker narrowly beat the Calday offside trap to give the team from Crosby hope of a comeback.
However, after a couple of tweaks in the formation to pack out the middle of the park, Calday ran rampant, Allport scoring two more and Poe grabbing his first goal of the season from close range.
Next up, the year 11 ‘B’ team travel to Cardinal Heenan on Tuesday in their National competition.
Congratulations to all 15 players involved – they represented the school excellently and professionally. Captain and 4-goal scorer Allport was the Man of the Match, but notable performances by Harris at right back, Brocklehurst in midfield and Sterry on the left must not go unnoticed!
