We are thrilled to share the news that former student Will Vaulks, now a celebrated midfielder for Sheffield Wednesday, has been honoured with the prestigious English Football League Community Player of the Year award. This accolade recognises his exceptional contributions to charitable causes, including his significant work with the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and the Baton of Hope suicide prevention service.

The EFL Community Player of the Year award is given to players who demonstrate outstanding community engagement and use their platform to make a positive impact. Will’s commitment to these causes extends beyond the football pitch, highlighting the importance of supporting off-field initiatives.

At the awards ceremony held at Grosvenor House in London, 30-year-old Will expressed his gratitude and reflected on the importance of his off-pitch activities: “It’s really important we raise awareness for off the pitch matters, it’s nice to be recognised and win an award for the things that mean a lot to me. What we do off the pitch is so important, as footballers we have a platform to give back, and I’m really grateful I can do that.”

This year marks a significant milestone for Will as it is the third time he has been recognised in the Championship division and his first win of the overall title. His involvement in the Baton of Hope relay race, a poignant event that involved bereaved family members carrying a silver baton from Glasgow to London, was particularly noteworthy. Will’s personal connection to the cause, having lost both his grandfathers to suicide, adds a deeply personal element to his advocacy.

The Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, based in Sheffield, has been a beacon of support for families seeking an alternative to hospital care for over 15 years. Will reaffirmed his support for this ‘most worthy cause’ upon signing with Sheffield Wednesday.

We at the school are immensely proud of Will’s achievements and his dedication to making a difference in the community. His journey from school fields to professional football pitches, and now to a champion of charitable causes, is an inspiration to us all.

Congratulations, Will, on your well-deserved recognition. Your school community is cheering you on as you continue to achieve on and off the field.
