The frontman of one of Wirral’s most successful bands returned to his former school to launch a music and arts center honoring a retired teacher.

Andy McCluskey, vocalist with electro-pop legends Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD), helped unveil a plaque commemorating the official opening of The Michael Twist Centre at Calday Grange Grammar School.

The Centre was named after Michael Twist, a former teacher at the school who retired in 2021.

Mr Twist devoted 37 years to teaching at Calday Grange Grammar School and during his time at the school took on many roles as well as acting Headteacher, twice.

The new centre has been described as a “state-of-the-art facility designed to inspire creativity and foster artistic expression”.

The centre features two classrooms, three music practice rooms, a recording studio and large rehearsal/performance space.

During the ceremony, Andy and Michael unveiled the plaque commemorating the official opening of the centre.

Andy said: “I am thrilled to be a part of this momentous occasion, The Michael Twist Centre represents an incredible opportunity for students to explore their creativity and push the boundaries of their musical and performing ability.”

The Michael Twist Centre’s opening marks “an exciting new chapter” for Calday Grange Grammar School.

Headteacher Stephen Gray said: “This new addition to Calday Grange Grammar School embodies the philosophy of the Governing Body and Senior Leadership Team, mainly that education goes beyond traditional learning in the classroom.

“Creative subjects play a formative role in the lives of our students.

“The Michael Twist Centre will give our students an outstanding facility to practice and hone their musical and performing skills”.
